Menopause is a journey, a transition and natural event in women's life. It marks the end of your fertility and menstrual cycle.

It usually happens naturally with age between the ages of 45 to 55 but can also happen due to treatment of disease or illness or due to surgery. In such cases, its called, depending on the cause, as induces menopause, surgical menopause or primary ovarian insufficiency.

The woman's body transitions to menopause over several years. There are varying symptoms, can differ for each woman and it can be confusing.

PERI-MENOPAUSE

THE FIRST STAGE

Peri-menopause


This is the first stage of menopause. Women start peri-menopause at different ages, some on the 40s, some start as early as 30s.

It starts with irregular periods, sometimes less or sometimes longer that the normal 28-day cycle. It can be longer, shorter, heavier or lighter then your normal period. It will be years before your last menstrual period, your body will start giving you clues that the menopause process has just started.

THE SECOND STAGE

Menopause


Menopause starts around the age 40 to 58 with the average age 51 and is the second stage, some call it Natural Menopause.

It's when you will have your final menstrual period. Once you've gone through 12 consecutive months without your period.

Peri-menopause is over and you've finally reached menopause when you have not had your period for over 12 months and by now, you are no longer at risk of getting pregnant.

Post-Menopause


The years after menopause begins when you hit the one-year mark from your last menstrual period, it's the final stage along your mid-life journey.
